People often say Iwagakure is too small to be a hidden village, but those people are only seeing half of the city, at most. The mines underneath the village stretch out farther than the overground limits of the city themselves. The underground ranges from abandoned mine-shafts, which doubtless have many a foolish corpse fouling the air inside them, to regular houses carved out of stone, lit with the same electricity as above the ground. Candles and lanterns are also very common, in areas that don’t have windows or entrances to the outside world.
This is where all the citizens of Iwagakure will retreat in the event of an invasion, despite a lot of the city already living down there. The windows and entrances can be sealed off, since the mines are often quite far underground. There are markets, theaters, bars, music venues and other noisy things down in the tunnels, meaning that the whole area has an atmosphere of being filled. Extended time in the mines of Iwagakure can do serious damage to the eyesight and hearing of people living down there.
