The Warai Clan is one of two Bloodline Limit Clans in Kumogakure. Their bloodline technique is called Doukoushi.
Clan History:
Before The Beginning:
Before the time of Great Ninja Villages, the Warai Clan served as a defence force for a large village in the Lightning Country, which was called Vineyard Town, despite it’s size. They were paid by the village leader to defend his people from harm from any bandits or raiders who might come their way, like had been happening to every other village in the area, causing the Vineyard Town to swell in size and population because of fleeing families or survivors.
The Warai Clan was one of the few ninja clan with a bloodline limit, at the time. They weren’t warlike by nature, but they were learning to use their abilities in conjunction with shinobi techniques in order to survive. They would occasionally send out small forces to fend off attackers in small villages, whether or not they could afford the services. And this was how the first Raikage, Kikotsu Ono, heard their name. He was the only ninja defending one of smaller villages that the Warais had come to defend. The squad of three shinobi showed up while Kikotsu was trying to fend off a force of some twenty raiders, helping him cut them to pieces. The people in the village were wounded, so the Warai convinced Kikotsu to help them transport the wounded families and their possessions from his small village to Vineyard Town.
Kikotsu Ono came to the man who was Master Fool of the Clan at the time, and thanked him graciously. He told the man of a dream of a whole city filled with able-bodied ninjas dedicated to defending not just a town or a region, but the whole country. The Fool said that he would help Kikotsu, if he could get the Daimyou’s backing, and one more ninja clan on his side.
Cloud Village, Chapter One
Being the incredible shinobi and hero he was, Kikotsu allied himself with the mountain dwelling Todoroki Clan, and approached the Daimyou, offering his services. After negotiations and the creation and speaking of oaths, the Daimyou agreed. They were to build a city around the Todoroki Family’s home in mountains, as a call to all the ninja in the land. And while many Warai members stayed in Vineyard Town to keep it safe, the Master Fool, having appointed a new Fool for the town he was leaving, and took the majority of the Warai Clan into the mountains, spreading word of the new light in the land as they went.
Most of the people they told didn’t believe such a thing could be done, but they swore that they would do it. And so it began, as the Warai Clan set up a market to the West of the Todoroki’s complex, and as the Todoroki’s began work constructing walls around the village. It started off slow, as a desolate rocky plain with scaffolding in a circle around it, with laughter coming from the country below, telling them they were idiots to try it. But people came, surely enough, wanting the protection of two ninja clans, and this legendary man they’d heard of, told he was some kind of lord amongst shinobi.
Chapter Two
And so, the Village Hidden In The Clouds, through years of work and populating, was born. The Todoroki and Warai Clans existed in relative peace, spending most of their time trying to rid their country (which was quite size-able at the time) of crime and raiders. Obviously, they couldn’t do this entirely, but it absolutely kept them busy, for years on end.
Kikotsu was crowned the Raikage of the village, and to celebrate the village’s success, he took on three students. The first, a girl from the Todoroki Clan, named Hebi. The second, a boy from the recent wave of immigrants, whose medical talents had shown promise at the recently developed academy. Finally, Nenshou Warai, a young boy, oddly quiet for a Warai member, but even more charismatic than the others.
The children effectively grew up together, and the Raikage would take them out on missions, since it was a time when there wasn’t anyone gutsy enough to attack the village, without or without him in it. He helped all of the children in their different ways, bringing them all up to Chuunin level and still working with them. However, most importantly, he helped Nenshou understand the way his bloodline worked. He had his medically gifted teammate observe the way his body functioned when he used the techniques, and discovered the way to perfect and master it.
Within years, Nenshou had done just that. He’d mastered the Doukoushi bloodline, and with it, he helped effectively end the last of the crime. He began to teach the other members of his clan, starting with little brother, Kahn, so that if he was killed in battle, the art wouldn’t have to be re-discovered.
Inevitably, as it always does, war picked up, between the Leaf and Cloud villages. Some historians say that it was Nenshou and Kahn Warai, or rather, The Red Jesters, who ensured Kumogakure’s survival in the war, separating the bloodline out into their own separate branches.
Chapter Three
Time passed, and the wars ended, letting Kumogakure gather even more followers and faith, since they had protected the country during a war. The walls were rebuilt, with a larger ring around the city and more defenses. The second Raikage came went, the glorious man that he was, without the Warai Clan doing anything overtly notable.
However, at the end of the second Raikage’s reign, he announced perhaps one of the biggest moments in the clan’s history. Katakith Warai, the pride of the Clan, The Cloud’s Scarlet Razor, was named the Third Raikage. It was a legendary moment for the clan, and she was also the first female Raikage to ever be named. She was the one to establish the first alliance with Iwagakure, bringing yet more shinobi and civilians to the city, finally filling out it’s huge borders.
Chapter Four
The peace didn’t last, but nothing really does. But for the first time in the clan’s history, they were recognized as something besides ninjas, which was a huge step for the near half of the clan that wasn’t soldiers. A woman from the clan named Tohoku, had one of the best ideas in the food history of Kumogakure, becoming the national delicacy a decade later. She created the caramel-strawberry pie, reaping huge profits off of her cookbooks and bakery.
Years later, in a completely unrelated events, the Master Fool crated the three Jokes, the people who took care of the clan members and made sure everything was working fine in the clan.
Kyats Warai, a beautiful sculpture artist later became the 4th Raikage’s wife.
Chatper Five:
War had started up again, what later became known as the War of 8. From invasions and attacks from various criminal organizations, the Raikage’s tower and the main hospital were destroyed, along with multiple other less important buildings. The man known as Kabuto was the man who funded and designed every building that was destroyed, most notably having the hospital named after him.
Nonetheless, war was still rampant, and the village needed a hero. And as they often do, that hero came in the form of a handsome Warai clan member. This man was named Sakumo, and while he was the Genin teammate of the woman who would become the 6th Raikage, he was a legend in his own right. The people who survived his cunning attacks and strategies called him “The Grinning Bird” for his constant smile and aerial antics.
Clan Information:
Clan Culture:
The Warai Clan complex is in the western district of Kumogakure, an has a market running through the main street. This is a big part of their income, where people come to shop, fix things that they’ve had broken, buy pastries or eat meals.
The family relies on the market to keep themselves alive, beside the shinobi. At the end of the market street, is a large gazebo, where alcohol is served and music is played on a nightly basis. Different shops open at this point, such as jewelry and clothing stores, so that people can buy the more expensive things when they’re intoxicated.
Warais are often loud and charismatic people, usually good dancers or athletes. The clan isn’t very musically talented, save a few special exceptions, so most of their art is dance or visual art, such as sculpture or pottery. They sometimes operate as a bit of a herd, and you’ll sometimes see a group of the redheads wandering around collectively, but they’re very inclusive to any friends or people who want to spend time with them. They’re not overly wealthy, but they are generous nonetheless.
Clan Appearance:
Warai Clan members exclusively have a bright to dark red hair colour, that other people would usually have to dye their hair to get. Their hair is almost always long and shiny, very few keep it short. No Warai man ever seems to be able to grow any form of facial hair, or much any body hair, much to the chagrin of old mean desiring wisdom beards. However, the head hair seems to never stop growing with age, so they could simply cut it off and glue it to their chins...
They often were dark blue, because it goes well with their red hair and brown eyes. They have fairly pale skin, compared to most Kumogakure residents. A lot of them have tattoos or war paint on their arms and chest. Many of the male members are frequently topless, as some odd part of their culture. It’s theorized that it has something to do with early training of clan members, or an initiation ceremony.
Clan Stereotypes:
The Warai Clan is known for being loud, and sometimes having trouble paying attention. (There is a specific time-out room in Kumogakure Academy for Warai students). People note them for being “hotheaded”, and despite most clan members not actually being arrogant, people think it’s hilarious because of their red hair. Every person in the Warai family has been traumatized by this failed humour.
Because of the aforementioned shirtless man phenomena being in the city for 6 generations of Raikages, any man or woman seen without a shirt will be called a “Redback”, or something of the like, because of the characteristic red hair that would flow down a Warai’s back. This also serves as a nickname for the clan members. They are also known to be very hospitable, and caring of people. Though there aren’t many Warai Medical Shinobi, they help a lot with things like keeping patients who can’t be held in the village’s hospital, which was named the Kabuto Hospital, after Kabuto Warai who made the plans for and funded the project.
